Over the first four and a half weeks of school we have been learning a lot about the history of scientific visualizations and all the advancements it has made over the years. We started with learning about some of the oldest cave paintings and followed the major advances of sci vis all the way to the coolest virtual reality software and computers. We also created a cool timeline of the history of sci vis. It gave a tour of the main advancements that have been made throughout sci vis's history. This year in school I will be using many of these sci vis techniques and technologies such as computers and perspective drawings. I will use computers to (among other things) write this blog, create animations, and research various sci vis topics. I will use perspective drawings to help create 3d images and understand how to make 2d things appear 3d.
The three most important advancements I think were made in sci vis were letters, computers and the television. Letters vastly simplified written language making it possible for more people to learn how to write. With more people writing the idea of contracts and better written laws could form improving the responsibility of the government to uphold promises. It also led to increased literacy and spread books, and on that note ideas, far and wide. Computers made the manipulation of data and the automation of machinery possible. They have been key in many of histories greatest accomplishments such as landing on the moon and skydiving from practically outer space. Television spread news quickly to the nation and the world. It also entertains us even to this day with shows and movies.
